The Science Behind Pandemics - Past, Present, and Future

Dr. Woodland (Woody) ran a federally-funded research laboratory for many years studying mechanisms of pulmonary disease mediated by pandemic pathogens. He also served on the government's National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity setting guidelines for the laboratory handling of extremely dangerous pathogens and for many years (until this year) was the Editor-in-Chief of the international research journal, Viral Immunology.  His 20-minute talk will address the initiation, frequency, and impact of pandemics in general and will also finish on a few comments about SARS-CoV-2 (i.e. the talk is not exclusively focused on the current pandemic).
