Program:  Bob Rose (Evergreen Rotary)
Saint Helene, Bay Islands, Honduras Project

Bob and Carol Rose talked about their Honduras Project, having volunteered in many places around the world.  With Rotary, they want to make international projects more effective.

Their project is on the island of Roatan, accessible only by dory.  The homes are on stilts; there are neither roads nor cars.  Residents are fishermen and their boats are made from carved out trees.  The Roses started helping there by teaching English.  Teachers have only a small presence at Saint Helene, as they come by boat and can only stay for 3 days out of the week.  The situation is bad, the school does not have a working toilet because there is no water, and the building is stifling hot so they often teach outdoors.

Water is marginally safe, the shallow wells are often brackish.  To get good water they have to travel by boat to a missionary site.

Fortunately there are several help projects underway in the community.  Rotarians and CARE are partnering with community members.  Included are a new water system, a new school and teacher training; tourism planning, community banking, electrical power, and more.
